Principle of Spark Machine:
In the fascinating world of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are ingeniously connected to opposite poles of the pulse power supply. Submerged in a working fluid or with fluid filling the discharge gap, a specific distance between these two electrodes allows the applied pulse voltage to overcome the fluid's resistance, sparking a discharge.
During this brief discharge moment, a tremendous amount of heat energy is focused within the micro-channel, reaching astonishing temperatures over 10,000 degrees Celsius, along with rapid pressure changes. This intense energy causes localized melting, vaporization, and expulsion of metal material into the working fluid. The expelled material swiftly condenses into solid metal particles, carried away by the working liquid, leaving a tiny pitting mark on the workpiece surface. The process pauses momentarily as the working fluid restores its insulating state between the electrodes.
Subsequently, the next pulse voltage sparks a discharge at another nearby point between the electrodes, continually generating spark discharges. Although each pulse discharge erodes a minute amount of metal, the high frequency of thousands of pulses per second results in significant cumulative metal removal, thereby ensuring effective productivity.
By maintaining a consistent discharge gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, the erosion of workpiece metal progresses as the tool electrode advances. Ultimately, the machined shape mirrors that of the tool electrode. By modifying the tool electrode's shape and its relative motion to the workpiece, complex profiles are precisely crafted. Materials with high electrical conductivity, melting points, and ease of processing-such as copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum-are typically used for tool electrodes. The tool electrode experiences minimal wear compared to the workpiece metal removal, often making the loss negligible.
The working liquid is critical for cooling and chip removal during the machining process, serving as the discharge medium. Preferred working liquids are low-viscosity, high flashpoint, and stable performance mediums such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines operate on self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between electrodes begins with a high voltage breaking down the medium as the electrodes approach each other, initiating a spark. The discharge results in a sharp drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel extinguishes promptly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to maintain the 'cold pole' characteristic, ensuring the channel energy affects only a tiny area, causing localized erosion of the electrode. This technique of material removal is termed EDM.
