The Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machine, often abbreviated as EDM, represents a pinnacle of mechanical processing technology. This extraordinary equipment is predominantly employed for intricate electrical discharge machining tasks, making it indispensable in the creation of meticulous metal molds and advanced mechanical apparatus. EDM stands out as a unique processing technique, whereby the electrical corrosion generated by pulsed discharges between electrodes, submerged in a working fluid, precisely erodes conductive materials. This immaculate process, also known as discharge machining or electrical corrosion machining, is frequently referred to by its English acronym, EDM.
Principle of Spark Machine:
In the cutting-edge world of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and workpiece are meticulously positioned on opposite poles of the pulse power supply. Immersed in a specialized working fluid or filled within the discharge gap, when the gap between the electrodes reaches an optimal distance, the applied pulse voltage surpasses the fluid's resistance, sparking a precise discharge.
During this fleeting discharge moment, a concentrated burst of heat energy channels through the micro-gap, creating temperatures soaring beyond 10,000 degrees Celsius, complete with abrupt pressure changes. This immense energy causes the localized metal to melt, vaporize, and eject into the working fluid. The expelled metal rapidly solidifies into particles, which are then seamlessly carried away by the fluid, leaving minuscule pitting marks on the workpiece. This process momentarily halts as the working fluid re-establishes its insulating properties between the electrodes.
Following this, the next pulse voltage sparks another discharge at a new adjacent point between the electrodes, generating repetitive spark discharges. Each pulse incrementally erodes tiny amounts of metal, but at a high frequency of thousands of pulses per second, a substantial metal removal is achieved, ensuring remarkable productivity.
By maintaining a precise discharge gap, the erosion of the workpiece metal continues as the tool electrode advances. Ultimately, the machined shape is an exact replica of the tool electrode. By altering the shape and motion of the tool electrode relative to the workpiece, intricate profiles are meticulously crafted. Tool electrodes are typically made from high-electrical-conductivity materials such as copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum. Despite slight wear on the tool electrode, the loss is minimal compared to the corrosion of the workpiece metal.
The working liquid, serving as the discharge medium, is crucial for cooling and chip removal during machining. Optimal working liquids include low-viscosity, high flash point, and stable mediums such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines operate using self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between electrodes initiates with a high voltage, breaking down the medium as electrodes approach each other. The resulting discharge causes a swift drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish rapidly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to maintain the 'cold pole' effect, ensuring the channel energy impacts only a tiny area, thus causing localized electrode erosion. This erosion-based material removal technique is known as EDM.
