Principle of Spark Machine:
In the innovative field of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are ingeniously connected to opposite poles of the pulse power supply. Submerged in working fluid or with fluid filled into the discharge gap, when the gap between these electrodes reaches a precise distance, the applied pulse voltage triumphs over the fluid's resistance, sparking a discharge.
During the fleeting moment of discharge, an immense amount of heat energy concentrates within the micro-channel, with temperatures soaring beyond 10,000 degrees Celsius and rapid pressure shifts. This intense energy leads to localized melting, vaporization, and expulsion of the metal material into the working fluid. The expelled material condenses swiftly into solid metal particles, carried away by the working fluid, leaving a tiny pitting mark on the workpiece surface. The process halts momentarily as the working fluid reestablishes its insulating state between the electrodes.
Successive pulse voltages initiate discharges at nearby points between the electrodes, repeatedly generating spark discharges. Each pulse discharge erodes a minute quantity of metal, but with the high-frequency pulses occurring thousands of times per second, substantial metal removal is achieved, ensuring remarkable productivity.
By consistently maintaining the discharge gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, the workpiece metal erosion progresses as the tool electrode advances. The final machined shape replicates the tool electrode. By modifying the tool electrode's shape and its motion relative to the workpiece, intricate profiles are crafted with precision. Common materials for tool electrodes include copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum due to their high electrical conductivity, melting points, and ease of processing. The tool electrode wear is minimal compared to the workpiece corrosion, often considered negligible.
As the discharge medium, the working liquid plays a vital role in cooling and chip removal during machining. Optimal working liquids include low-viscosity, high flash point, and stable performance mediums such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines utilize self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between electrodes starts with a high voltage, breaking down the medium as electrodes approach each other, initiating a spark. The discharge significantly reduces resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish quickly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to maintain the 'cold pole' characteristic, ensuring the channel energy impacts only a tiny area, causing localized electrode erosion. This material removal method is known as EDM.
