Principle of Spark Machine:
In the fascinating world of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are ingeniously connected to opposite poles of the pulse power supply. Submerged in working fluid or with the fluid filling the discharge gap, once the gap between these electrodes reaches a specific distance, the applied pulse voltage triumphs over the fluid's resistance, initiating a spark discharge.
In the fleeting moment of discharge, an immense amount of heat energy is concentrated within the micro-channel, soaring to temperatures over 10,000 degrees Celsius and inducing rapid pressure changes. This intense energy causes localized melting, vaporization, and expulsion of the metal material into the working fluid. The expelled material quickly condenses into solid metal particles, carried away by the working liquid, leaving a tiny pitting mark on the workpiece surface. The process pauses briefly as the fluid restores its insulating state between the electrodes.
Following this, the next pulse voltage ensures a discharge at another nearby point between the electrodes, repetitively creating spark discharges. Each pulse discharge erodes a minuscule amount of metal, but with the high frequency of thousands of pulses per second, significant cumulative metal removal is achieved, ensuring efficient productivity.
By maintaining a consistent discharge gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, the metal erosion of the workpiece continues as the tool electrode advances towards it. Ultimately, the machined shape mirrors that of the tool electrode. By altering the electrode's shape and its relative motion to the workpiece, complex profiles are precisely crafted. Materials with high electrical conductivity, melting points, and ease of processing, like copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum, are typically used for tool electrodes. Although the tool electrode experiences minimal wear compared to the workpiece metal corrosion, the loss is often negligible.
Serving as the discharge medium, the working liquid is indispensable for cooling and chip removal during the machining process. Preferred working liquids include low-viscosity, high flash point, and stable performance mediums such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines operate on self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between the electrodes begins with a high voltage, breaking down the medium as the electrodes near each other, initiating a spark. The discharge causes a sharp drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish promptly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to preserve the 'cold pole' characteristic, ensuring the channel energy affects only a tiny area, causing localized erosion of the electrode. This erosion-based material removal technique is termed EDM.
