Principle of Spark Machine:
In the cutting-edge world of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are ingeniously connected to opposite poles of a pulse power supply. Submerged in a specialized working fluid or filled into the discharge gap, when the gap between the electrodes reaches a precise distance, the applied pulse voltage overcomes the fluid's resistance, triggering an electrifying spark discharge.
During the fleeting moment of discharge, an immense amount of heat energy converges within the micro-channel, with temperatures soaring beyond a spectacular 10,000 degrees Celsius and accompanied by rapid pressure fluctuations. This intense energy induces localized melting, vaporization, and expulsion of metal material into the working fluid. The expelled material quickly solidifies into tiny metal particles carried away by the fluid, leaving behind a minute pitting mark on the workpiece surface. The process halts temporarily while the fluid re-establishes its insulating state between the electrodes.
The subsequent pulse voltage sparks a discharge at another nearby point between the electrodes, repetitively generating these spark discharges. Each pulse erodes a minuscule amount of metal, but due to the high frequency of thousands of pulses per second, substantial cumulative metal removal is achieved, ensuring impressive productivity levels.
By maintaining a consistent discharge gap between the tool electrode and the workpiece, the erosion of the workpiece metal continues as the tool electrode advances towards it. Ultimately, the machined shape becomes a precise mirror of the tool electrode. By modifying the tool electrode's shape and its movement relative to the workpiece, complex profiles are intricately crafted. High electrical conductivity materials with high melting points and ease of processing-such as copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum-are typically utilized for tool electrodes. While the tool electrode experiences minimal wear compared to the workpiece metal corrosion, the loss is generally insignificant.
Serving as the crucial discharge medium, the working liquid is vital for cooling and chip removal during machining. Preferred working liquids include those with low viscosity, high flash points, and stable performance, such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsions. EDM machines function on self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between the electrodes starts with a high voltage that breaks down the medium as the electrodes approach each other, initiating a spark. The resulting discharge leads to a sharp drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish promptly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to maintain the 'cold pole' characteristic, ensuring that the channel energy affects only a tiny area, causing localized erosion of the electrode. This erosion-based removal technique is known as EDM.
