Principle of Spark Machine:
In the sophisticated world of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are meticulously connected to opposite poles of the pulse power supply. When these electrodes are immersed in working fluid or filled into the discharge gap, and the gap between them attains a precise distance, the pulse voltage overcomes the fluid's resistance, initiating a spark discharge.
During the fleeting moment of discharge, an immense amount of heat energy is focused within the micro-channel, reaching temperatures that exceed 10,000 degrees Celsius, along with rapid pressure fluctuations. This extreme energy leads to localized melting, vaporization, and expulsion of the metal material into the working liquid. The expelled material quickly condenses into solid metal particles, which are then swept away by the working liquid, leaving behind a tiny pitting mark on the workpiece's surface. The process halts momentarily as the working fluid reinstates its insulating properties between the electrodes.
Following this, the subsequent pulse voltage triggers a discharge at another nearby point between the electrodes, repeatedly generating spark discharges. While each pulse discharge erodes an almost negligible amount of metal, the high frequency of thousands of pulses per second leads to substantial cumulative metal removal, ensuring notable productivity.
By consistently maintaining a discharge gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, metal erosion of the workpiece proceeds as the tool electrode advances towards it. The machined shape ultimately reflects that of the tool electrode. By modifying the tool electrode's shape and its relative motion to the workpiece, intricate profiles are precisely formed. High electrical conductivity materials with significant melting points and ease of processing, such as copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum, are commonly used for tool electrodes. The tool electrode's wear is minimal compared to the workpiece metal corrosion, making the loss often insignificant.
The working liquid, serving as the discharge medium, is crucial for cooling and chip removal during the machining process. Preferred working liquids include those with low viscosity, high flash points, and stable performance, such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines operate on the self-excited discharge principle: the spark discharge between the electrodes initiates with a high voltage, breaking down the medium as the electrodes near each other, sparking. The discharge causes a sharp drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish rapidly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to maintain the 'cold pole' attribute, ensuring the channel energy impacts only a small area, thereby causing localized erosion of the electrode. This erosion-based material removal technique is referred to as EDM.
